Shaw + Smith Pinot Noir 2009
Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and Shaw and Smith take
exceptional care in producing theirs, focusing on
site selection, clonal mix, miniscule yields and fastidious vineyard
management.
They have planted the highly regarded 777 Burgundian clone and MV6, the clone behind many of Australia's best Pinots. The vines are hand pruned and handpicked and the fruit destemmed and lightly crushed in open fermenters. The 2009 vintage was subjected to 4-5 days cold maceration preceding fermentation with hand plunging 5-6 times per day. Malolactic fermentation and maturation followed in new (25%) and older French barriques.
The 2009 vintage conditions in the Adelaide Hills were generally cool and dry resulting in a relatively small but high quality crop, allowing for excellent flavour development and a fresh, elegant wine. The nose features red fruit aromas in the strawberry/raspberry/cherry spectrum while the palate is mid weight yet supple and rich and will develop further with age.
