Riesling

Description:

Riesling depending on degree of ripeness and origin - may detect crisp green apples, citrus, peaches and even tropical fruit. As they age, take on toasty notes, (think honey, roasted almonds and cashew nuts). High in acidity.

Young Aussie Riesling tend to be packed with bright flavours, (lime notes - Eden Valley, Floral - Clare Valley)

This noble grape is German and is an early ripening variety that's suited to cooler areas like Germany, Alsace (France), Great Southern (WA) and at present it's coming of age in The Eden & Clare Valleys of South Australia since about 1990. Australian winemakers have been lazy towards this grape because in the old days this went into all of those cheap, slightly sweet fruity cask wines with whatever else the wine maker had left. A Riesling displays true varietal characteristics like - dry refreshing crispness, luscious floral aromas, citrus, grapefruits apples, limes and sometimes oranges.

Growing Regions
These grapes can only reach their optimum growing potential in cool, acid retaining conditions such as - Germany, France, New Zealand, Great Southern Regions of WA, Tasmania and the Eden & Clare Valley's in South Australia, which are producing prime Australian examples. This is due to the fact that 97, 98, 99 were all cooler vintages with limited heat around the time of vintage, perfect for Riesling to flourish. The wines of Alsace, Austria & Germany are almost majestic and are the pinnacle of Riesling Producers.

Style & Taste Characteristics
Serve this wine anytime of the day extremely chilled (4-6°C) and any fine Riesling will shine fineness and display flavours like no other variety in both the lighter and more heavier aged styles. This wine flourishes with food or simple on its own presenting such tastes to the palate of intense lime juice, quince, ginger, fine acids, honey, sweet fruit salads, tangy guava's, passionfruit, light textures, full lasting flavours right across the palate often finishing with subtle blood orange flavours. When it begins to age it develops flavours of honey & toast similar to chardonnay but never oaked. This variety can also age beautifully for 10 or even up to 20 years.

Food to enjoy with:
Riesling is an extremely versatile food wine. With its good fruit flavours and racy acidity has the simplest balance of all varieties, hence making it an easy match to menus and food combination's.

Canapés of seafood or sushi, Thai Curries (red or green), Tandoori Dishes, vegetarian lasagna, char grilled prawns, squid, scallops and smoked fish, Risotto & Spinach Pasties, crepes, chilled asparagus & Parmesan, olive oils, sourdough with Brie, ginger, rosemary, lemon thyme, char grilled anything, there are many more and Rieslings are ripe for the drinking 'so drink em'!!!
