Rioja
Rioja lies in the north of Spain, 100 kms south of Bilbao port and runs southeast for 150kms, following the course of the Ebro river. High mountains enclose the valley giving rise to a local climate ideally suited to grape vine cultivation.
The region is split into two by the Ebro River. Rioja Alta has a great deal of rainfall and a mild climate while Rioja Baja is a hotter and more arid area influencing which varietals grown in each area. The capital, Logrono links the two areas. The most popular places to visit are Logrono and Haro, known for their wineries.
The soil in the area is clay based with a concentration of limestone and sandstone, although it is the high content of iron and chalk which provides the red hue in the soil. September to October is the usual harvest time for most of the Rioja vineyards and their varied grape varieties which make up red, white and rose wines.
