Taltarni
Forming part of the revitalisation of the wine industry in the Pyrenees, the chosen 1700 acre (688 hectares) site at Taltarni was first planted in 1969. Taltarni was purchased in 1972 by current owner John Goelet. Initially planted to Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Taltarni soon developed a reputation for crisp sparkling wines and fresh whites. The first commercial wine was released in 1977. Taltarni produces a remarkable family of superb Victorian white, reds from its estate in Victoria's Pyrenees and sparkling wines from Tasmanian Vineyards. Taltarni takes its name from an aboriginal word for 'red earth' that aptly describes the iron rich red soil of the Pyrenees.
Taltarni's current senior winemaker, Loïc Le Calvez developed a fond interest in wine while working in his father's fine wine store in Brittany in France. He also completed wine and management studies in Bordeaux. Loïc came to Australia in 2002 working as assistant winemaker for Taltarni and Clover Hill, followed by a vintage in Sonoma County in California; before returning to Taltarni for now his sixth vintage with Taltarni.
