Wine of the Week:
Noster

This wine is an absolute ripper. The Noster is made from 7 to 18-year old garnacha (55%) and carineña (45%) vines. Older French oak is used for half of the blend, while the other half is kept in stainless steel vats. This is right alongside the 'Tar and Roses' for great quality at a great price. The Noster shows a bit more refinement, where the Tar and Roses is more in the rustic zone.
Nice dark colour with a solid nose of soot, boozy cherries, violets, dark chocolate and a touch of raspberry. Quite intense, but smooth in the mouth with a backbone of fine tannins and acid. There is a a long warm finish as the wine opens up with more air. The palate shows cherry and raspberry with some minerals and pepper. The finish is long showing off the smooth tannins. Well worth the money, and a good intro to Priorat.
Drink now and over the next 6 years.

Deus Brut des Flandres
Prestige Cuvee 2006
“It’s a moment to be cherished in the liquor game when you come across a product that’s quite unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before. The first time I tried Deus Brut des Flandres was one of those times.”
Josh Markey AC wine/beer Consultant
This beer is brewed in Belgium at a brewery founded in 1791 and then shipped to Champagne, France where extra fermentable sugars and yeast are added. The bottles are then stored in caves for twelve months while they are racked, disgorged and topped up Champenoise style.
The finished product is seductively packaged like Champagne and pops like Champagne but once poured it begins to reveal its true character.
Best served chilled from an ice bath, it pours crystal clear, a golden foaming nectar with a fine and persistent head. The complexity of its aroma provides a challenge for the olfactory senses: is that mint or musk? Is it sweetness or earth, cinnamon or citrus?
The first mouthful explodes into bubbles that dance away on your tongue leaving surprisingly delicate footprints of earth, fruit and spice. The finish is drying and faintly bitter with a warming heat courtesy of its 11.5% alcohol.
As Fred Eckhardt, author of The Essentials of Beer Style (1989) wrote:
“Alongside Deus, Champagne is boring".
