Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Tradition Rouge 2022

"The character of the vintage is amply demonstrated by the prospective blend of the 2022 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Tradition, assembled from several foudres. Raspberries, dark chocolate and mocha notes appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and dense. It's very impressive as an entry-level cuvée. The irrepressible Boirons (Nicolas and his wife, Jeanne-Claire) were their charming, smiling selves when I arrived at their cellars on the edge of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, joined by consultant Emmanuel Gagnepain, who has succeeded Philippe Cambie at this estate. Overall, the family farms 32 hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, plus five hectares of Côtes du Rhône (under the Famille Boiron label). The farming and winemaking here is fairly traditional, with the white made mainly in stainless steel and the reds mainly in foudres-at least for the Cuvée Tradition; the special cuvées, made in smaller volumes, tend to go into demi-muids. The red wines are typically at least 75% Grenache, with an increasing proportion of whole clusters in recent (post-Cambie) years ."

Beautiful sense of freshness on the nose, then massively concentrated, with deep liquorice flavour and a savoury finish. Naturally big and muscular, tannins are a touch dry and fibrous, but should round out with time. Quite a beast! Should be good value for those looking for serious Châteauneuf bang for buck. This producer's other cuvées this year are unapproachably massive and tannic, and need to be assessed in bottle before any reasonable judgement can be made.

"A well-crafted, vivid and bright blend of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. The nose shows aromas of red berries, dried herbs, dried thyme and charred bark. It's medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Lively and focused, with plenty of energy. Spicy finish. Try from 2025."
