Superb, ageworthy Chianti from the brilliant 2015 vintage

At Armadale Cellars, we love good Chianti Classico.   Undervalued, Chianti Classico is arguably the most authentic, unadulterated expression of Sangiovese.  There are very few, if any, better examples of Chianti Classico than Poggerino.

The historic Poggerino property was once part of the estate of Prince Ginori Conti, a member of one of Florence's oldest families. Today the estate, situated at Radda in the heart of Chianti Classico, is run by highly-dedicated brother and sister team, Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who took over from their father in the mid-1980's.

The attention to detail in the vineyard verges on fanatical, with biodynamic farming, careful clonal selection, close planted vines, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and hand picking to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Wild yeast fermentation, modern winemaking techniques and 12 months in French barrique and tonneaux complete the process.

Over the years, Poggerino Chianti Classico has been a remarkably consistent performer.  Since 2008, every vintage has scored 17/20 or more on  No other Chianti Classico can boast such consistently high scores.  2015 is a stunning Tuscan vintage, and Poggerino Chianti Classico 2015 may well be the best from this label in a decade.

Deep garnet in appearance.  Lifted nose of black cherry compote, graphite and dusty dried herbs.  Mid-weight, well composed and very elegant - polished, but not forced.  Oozes class.  Fine powdery tannins sit under layers of supple cherry fruit.  Long and fine.  One of the wines of the vintage.  Drink now or cellar up to 10 years.
